Male Yeast Infection – The Facts

Male Yeast Infection – Things You Need to Know – Symptoms and Causes

Since women are often prone to getting yeast infections, the male yeast infection is a condition that is often overlooked and misunderstood.

Male Yeast Infections Can Get You Down

Men can also get yeast infections and will require an at home remedy or medical treatment to alleviate the condition.

Some men may contract a yeast infection and not even realize they are dealing with this particular type of fungal infection.

An examination of how to identify a male yeast infection and the causes cited for such infections, can help men learn how to identify the onset of the condition and what causes might be contributing to the infection in the first place.

The Potential Causes

Sexual Contact

The potential causes of the male yeast infection are numerous. Often times, if the male is sexually intimate with a female and that female ends up with a yeast infection, the condition is passed on to the male through sexual contact.

When the female is diagnosed with a yeast infection, sometimes a physician will suggest that her partner or spouse is treated for the same condition to avoid reinfection and the passing back and forth of the bacteria between the two individuals.

Food Choices

Another cause for a yeast infection in males can be attributed to food and beverages that are consumed.

Males that drink beer, wine, or that consume a lot of bread are also more likely to wind up with an infection. This is because the latter beverages and food contain yeast in them.

What’s more, diets filled with carbohydrates and sugars can contribute to an overgrowth of yeast in the body. This means that a poor diet can either trigger or perpetuate a yeast infection in men and women.

Digestive Imbalances

Imbalances in the digestive tract can lend to the development of a yeast infection in a man too.

The digestive tract contains bad and good microorganisms; the good microorganisms help to keep the growth of Candida controlled, but if there are not enough of them, the Candida can quickly grow out of control, pass through the intestines, and into the body.

Imbalances may be caused by hormonal changes in the body, poor dietary habits, or through the use of antibiotics, that inadvertly destroy the good microflora while they destroy the bad bacteria in the body cited for the cause of illnesses.

Immune System Issues and Spermicidals

If a man has an immune system that is weakened or compromised in any way, again, he is more likely to get a yeast infection that will require treatment to remedy.

The use of condoms containing the spermicide Nonoxynol-9 has been found to contribute to the onset of yeast infections in male too.

To summarize, a male can get a yeast infection due to all of the following causes:

  • Sexual contact
  • Consuming beer
  • Consuming wine
  • Consuming bread
  • Digestive tract imbalances
  • Antibiotic use
  • Poor diet
  • A weakened immune system
  • Exposure to Nonoxynol-9/Spermicide

Skin Effects

When a man gets a yeast infection, he may notice the development of cracked, dry skin on the penis or on other parts of the body. Red, itchy areas can develop in the groin, on the torso, under the arms, under the neck, on the hands, and in skin folds.

If the yeast infection on the penis becomes very severe, an erection can become painful. In fact, a severe yeast infection can cause the skin to become highly red, irritated, and cracked to the point of slight bleeding.

Bodily Effects

When a man has a yeast infection, he may note that he also has digestive issues; the digestive problems are attributed to the imbalance of micro flora in the digestive tract.

Men may also experience the onset of halitosis, bloating, flatulence, loosened stools, mood changes, fatigue, and loss of memory, problems with the prostate, and an absence of energy, sexual dysfunction, diarrhea, indigestion, and jock itch, the development of athlete ’s foot, flaky skin, and dry skin.

Some men who develop yeast infections also note a sudden increase for a desire in foods high in sugar in starch; it is not uncommon to develop a desire for potato chips, pastas, candies, and pastries because the sugars and carbohydrates in these foods are what yeast cells thrive on.

Male Yeast Infection Versus Other Medical Conditions

Many men who contract genital warts confuse the warts for a yeast infection; genital warts are caused by virus and are sexually transmitted.

The warts will require different treatment than a yeast infection would require. Some many also think that the bumps that appear on the penis from Fordyce disease are also a yeast infection; in truth, these bumps are nothing more than oil secreting sebaceous glands that are perfectly harmless.

In addition, it is easy to confuse a condition like Hirsuties papillaris genitalis with a yeast infection; but the papules that appear are sebaceous and sweat glands that sometimes become overly sensitive and not an infection that has resulted from an overgrowth of Candida. To summarize, symptoms of a male yeast infection include all of the following:

  • Cracked skin
  • Dry skin
  • Red/Burning skin
  • Itchiness
  • Digestive issues
  • Bowel Movement Irregularity
  • Jock Itch
  • Flaking Skin
  • Craving for Sugar and Carbs

A male yeast infection can be very distressing but by using the right treatment you can deal with it very effectively.
